Wanja is am Afro-Indie-Soul singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Nairobi, Kenya and Sydney, Australia.
She began songwriting seriously at the age of 17; teaching herself the guitar and the piano and practicing accompaniment and composition. Her influences include the mellow sultry sounds of Amy Winehouse, Lianne La Havas, Nai Palm, Ella Fitzgerald and Corinne Bailey-Rae alongside an extensive exposure to Indie/Folk and jazz music.
In 2014 she released her first EP ‘High Tide’ which includes 5 songs of varying genres, all exploring the different sides of her unique musicianship, cultural influences, and vocals.
In February 2015 she released a new tropical summer single ‘Counting’ and an accompanying music video.
She recently completed a Music major at The University of Sydney, gigging and composing in Sydney throughout her degree. In that time she has collaborated with various artists such as Kato Change (KE), Jinku (KE), Junior Nyong’o (KE), Zigi Blau (AUS) and Lagum (UG) contributing her distinct soulful vocals, and musical training to these releases. She was recently commissioned to write and record a song for an internationally aired advertisement for Duracoat.
Wanja has also performed at various festivals in both Australia and Kenya and continues to gig regularly, hoping to spread her messages of female empowerment and storytelling throughout Africa and to the world.
She is currently composing and recording her debut album ‘Matriarch’: a creative endeavor telling the story of contemporary womanhood through a personal lens. It is due to be released in Summer 2018.Read more Read less
