Leadership and Legacy16/07/2019
Two weeks ago, one of Africa’s biggest business titans joined the realm of legends and left behind an incredible legacy for us to consider.
In the last two weeks, people all over the world have been drawing inspiration and sharing wisdom from Bob Collymore.
Having been the CEO of one of the biggest telecommunications companies in Africa for the past 12 years, Collymore was a true role model and a hugely influential public figure in Kenya, who used his platform to impact the lives of many.
Here are our top three things that stand out to us about Bob’s story:
- It’s not about where you come from, it’s about where you are going and who you go with. Bob came from a humble start, even an impoverished start, he didn’t obtain a higher education, and yet rose to become the Captain of the most profitable and fastest growing Telco in the region.
- In Bob’s words, “Sometimes you just need the hand of a bigger brother to get you to where you want to go.” Cultivate meaningful relationships, where you can call on and depend on one another – in the workplace and beyond. Never be afraid to ask for and accept help, and don’t be slow to extend your helping hand.
- Everyone can impact other lives in a positive way. Young or old, black or white – live in a way where you “help people because you can”. Use your power to uplift others. Don’t just focus on profits – also aim to impact society. Safaricom has used its success to touch lives and has invested in the arts, music and the youth, all under Bob’s leadership. “It is a blessing to have a lot…but it is an even bigger blessing is that you can do a lot with what you have no matter your size. You’re never too small to make a difference in this world.” (Bob’s words from a speech he gave to a group of schoolchildren in 2013)
