Karun is a genre-bending soulful R&B singer whose stage presence is best labeled as jazzy indie-pop with a sprinkle of grit.
She is formally known as Miss Karun from the BET Award nominated hip-hop group Camp Mulla, and Runkah of the alternative ‘Electro- Organic’ collective Cosmic Homies.
Karun released her debut solo album ‘Sun & Moon’ in 2013 featuring 14 songs as an ode to her favourite number 7. The ‘INDIGO EP’ followed as a collaboration with the Collective East African Wave and featured more experimental sounds, with hits like ‘A Million Emotions’ and ‘Need You The Most’ ft Tanzanian crooner Joseph Kiwango. It was premiered on Fader magazine, a New York City-based music magazine covering music, style and culture. The album explored different sounds and styles, even featuring Shrap artists, a new genre of Swahili trap and was quite a contrast to her previous releases.
Karun went off to study music at the prestigious Berklee College Of Music in Boston, US, making time between studies to play in venues like ‘The Shrine’ in NYC, celebrated by Fela Kuti fans all over the world, and SXSW Austin Texas and the Madaraka Festival, Seattle.
‘Roses’ is the most recent release since Karun returned home and is already being labelled as the beginning of something big; the next chapter of her career.
